Another very warm day on tap, though we will see high clouds spanning across our forecast area. These clouds will help trap daytime heating and contribute to even warmer temperatures than yesterday. West southwest winds will remain generally light at ridge top, with a few moderate gusts ahead of a fast moving disturbance cutting across our area tonight. Clouds will increase toward the afternoon and evening, with a quick 1-4” of snowfall possible overnight. As system moves out tomorrow, sunny skies will return.

Another warm, spring day is on tap today with temperatures at 11,000 feet and above climbing into the mid to upper 30s today and tomorrow. We will see an increase of westerly wind increase midday, especially near ridge top, before decreasing toward sunset. Tomorrow looks even warmer, before temperatures moderate slightly. Next chance of significant precipitation is 7-10 days away.

Our weather will continue its transition towards clear, calm and warm as weak high pressure develops over the West. We’ll see temperatures rise to freezing today and reach towards 40F tomorrow under mostly clear skies and fairly tame winds. Enjoy the sunny weather — the storm track looks to stay north of us through the next week. .

The storm track is shifting northward, and we’ll be under dry and cool W/NW flow today as weak high pressure begins to develop and carry us through to the weekend. Winds are still gusting above 50 mph this morning, but will start to ease later this afternoon. Temperatures will rebound about 10 degrees warmer tomorrow.

If you didn’t notice the wind last night you must have been sleeping in a cave. Good thing it’s not trash day in Crested Butte. A low-pressure trough is pushing through Colorado with a relatively low elevation jet and strong pressure gradient bringing intense winds to the area. Early this morning at 12,000ft southwest winds were blowing 60mph and gusting to 100mph on Scarps Ridge. Unfortunately, we only got the wind last night and not the snow. This morning a cold front is pushing into the area and bringing a band of heavier snow showers. After this cold front moves in this morning, we’ll see a dropping temperature trend and decreasing snow showers. Westerly winds will remain elevated through the day and finally taper this evening. Dryer northwest then west flow will set up for the rest of the work week and with slowly rebounding temperatures through the week.

The next Pacific trough of low pressure is coming ashore today as we see a turn back to stormy weather. Ahead of this system today, clouds will be on the increase and winds will be very strong/gusty. We may see a dusting of new snow early this afternoon, while the best snow accumulations will happen tonight. Areas of the forecast favored by southwest flow will see the most snow accumulation, like those in the Kebler Pass and Paradise Divide. The arrival of a cold front will bring dropping temperatures tonight into tomorrow while norther west flow continues to bring cool air into the area as this storm departs tomorrow. The big news for today will be the wind!

The axis of high pressure passed overhead last night, opening the doors to warmer southwest flow ahead of the next Pacific trough. There is enough high-level moisture for a few thin clouds today, and winds will begin to increase. Tie down your children and small pets tomorrow, winds will be gusting beyond 60 mph as the trough makes landfall. Snowfall will spread into the Elk Mountains by Sunday evening, and we can look forward to a relatively modest refresh by Monday morning, in the 4-8″ range.

My mom called last night to remind everyone to reapply sunscreen through the day. A broad ridge of high pressure will shift east across the Continental U.S. over the weekend. Mountain temperatures will rise from the teens this morning to near freezing under sunny skies and light winds. A Pacific trough moves onshore on Sunday, bringing our next round of snowfall starting Sunday evening.

The broad trough that brought our active weather earlier this week is shifting eastward across the U.S., and Colorado sits on the front end of the next feature, a broad ridge. Northwest flow will keep temperatures cool today, with a warming trend into the weekend. You’ll be burning through your sunscreen supplies until Monday.

Temperatures bottomed out in the single digits below zero this morning, and will struggle to break the upper teens as clouds linger and limit daytime heating across higher terrain favored by residual northwest flow.  Yesterday’s storm system has moved eastward, and aside from the higher peaks, we will see generally sunny skies for most of the forecast area.  Moderate west winds will drop off this morning, leaving forgivingly light winds to treat those able to enjoy the backcountry today.  Looking ahead, sunshine and a gradual warming trend will bring us into the weekend.  The next potential for a shot of snowfall looks like Sunday, but accumulations look light at this point.
