Weather Outlook

Continued unsettled weather in store for the next couple of days. The current short wave trough which delivered this new snow has moved east of us this morning. Some orographic snow showers will continue this morning but disipate. A brief break in the action today before another short wave moves in tonight. A good zonal flow with a little jet support could help produce some good snowfall. Looks like the heaviest snow will be on Monday starting this evening and continuing through tomorrow night. Quick clearing on Tuesday before another trough develops for Wednesday and Thursday.

In the Backcountry

A quick return to winter with the absence of the sun and a little new snow. A couple inches of new snow in town with up to 4 inches at Schofield Pass. Yesterday's overcast weather kept crusts frozen. With mostly overcast skies today we can expect crusts to stay frozen again with a little new snow on top, "Dust on Crust"! The new snow may not be bonding well to these crusts as we could see some dry piont releases today on steep slopes. With up to 4 inches and moderate winds we could see some shallow wind slabs developed. These wind slabs could be sitting on slick crusts that could act as a good bed surface. Not expecting the snow to get wet today with mostly overcast skies, but watch for the possibility of the sun poking out mid-day. Watch for the potential for wind slabs to build through the day and this evening with more snow in the forecast.

Travel Advisory

Watch for the possibility of triggering shallow wind slabs on lee aspects today. North through Southeast aspects will be most suspect where drifts are deeper in wind exposed areas. With dust on crust conditions watch for the possibility of point releases on steep slopes. Watch for the danger to slowly rise as we get more snow over the next 36 hours.
